“We need to put in place some government policy , because all too often a pensioner considers downsizing only to reject it because it would mean a hit on their pension :

New Data from ABS shows one third of older Australians in low income households are “asset rich” and ”income poor”.  We will need to put in place the right monetary policies to help downsize by giving them access to that money to help with their lifestyle it will also reduce government dependency making us all all able to access schools, medical facilities for the younger population as well.

For health reasons, many older Australians need to downsize to homes without steps or big back yards and have a desire to move to more appropriate accommodation, like a retirement village, apartment or villa where there are cheaper rates and utility costs."

One of our top priorities is re-calibrating age pension rules, to allow pensioners to unlock home equity and downsize if they wish to - without their pension being cut.

- Mary Wood, Executive Director - Retirement Living Property Council of Australia
